How I Use AI in Public Relations

Writer: Alexson CalahanAlexson Calahan

Let’s get this out of the way first—I know there are more AI tools for PR than I could ever catalog. In fact, this post might be outdated the moment I hit publish. But I love the nitty-gritty, practical details, so I want to share how I actually use AI in my PR practice. Spoiler alert: writing isn’t one of them.

As my "meeting brain"

I record most client calls and feature story interviews using an AI notetaker. Clients and interviewees have access to these notes, making it easy for me to retrieve key details. When writing a patient story, for example, I can simply ask the transcript when the person was diagnosed instead of sifting through my notes. I can also check when a client and I scheduled our next meeting or review the agreed-upon process for a project.

Editor

PR folks love writing. We’re storytellers at heart, aiming to make you feel something with just words on a screen. But every writer needs a good editor. I use AI for a quick clarity and grammar check, and sometimes for suggestions. I don’t always take them—but occasionally, I get a gem.

Pitch angle brainstorm partner

There’s no single formula for crafting a winning pitch, but that doesn’t stop me (or my AI) from trying. I combine the target audience, outlet information, and key messages or CTAs, then see if any fresh angles emerge. Since there are no bad ideas in a brainstorm, this often sparks a solid direction—one that has landed me real coverage.

How about you?
